SE чб ретроспектива (98–05) / b&w retrospective (98–05)
This retrospective program features films shot on analog film by students of Karpenko-Karyi University from 1998 to 2005. These are works by a new generation of filmmakers—those who studied in the post-Soviet era but already had greater access to world cinema and culture, and, most importantly, more freedom of self-expression than their predecessors.
At the same time, this was one of the most challenging periods in the history of Ukrainian cinema: state funding was nearly non-existent, very few feature films were being made, and the documentary school was stagnant—right up until the events of the Revolution of Dignity.
An atmosphere of dreamy decline and uncertainty that was, at the same time, a period of new possibilities. The films differ greatly in form and theme — yet they all share a deep sense of sincerity and artistic exploration.
Daoist Looking Back, Lifter, The Shooting Gallery, Paperwork, Vitia Hurov Is Leaving for Italy, Dreams in the City, Wayfarers.
