Biography

ODYSSAY is the stage name of Ukrainian electronic live performer, singer, songwriter and music producer Maksym Yermaakov. Born 19 December 1991.

The name ODYSSAY came about by accident — through an unusual transliteration of the English word "Odyssey." But the accident turned out to be accurate: an odyssey is a journey, a search, a path toward oneself. That describes both the music and the career.

Genres: progressive house, melodic techno, electronica. The ODYSSAY sound is atmospheric electronics with ethnic elements and cinematic scale. Deep bass, hypnotic melodic lines, a vast overall sound. Not background music and not euphoric club bangers — something between, where there is both space for thought and energy for movement.

Career beginnings: Reborn and Before You Go

The career began in 2020 with the debut EP Reborn in collaboration with Indifferent Guy. Two Ukrainian musicians, two different generations, two different genres found a shared language — the release accumulated over a million Spotify streams.

The track Before You Go from that EP — a collaboration with Indifferent Guy on the Area Verde label — was released as a separate single and received radio play. Kiss FM (UA) named it Track of 2021. For a debut artist just starting out, that is a meaningful early achievement.

Before You Go is about loss. Not necessarily a person — it could be a relationship, a moment, a feeling. "Hardest moment is the breakup. There's still hope. When all is said and done, look into my eyes before you go" — that is how the idea was described on the release page. A simple, universal emotion; a complex, atmospheric sound. That combination became the ODYSSAY signature.

Solo work

After the debut EP, ODYSSAY continued developing his own authorial voice. Solo tracks Freedom, Castle in the Sky and Unbroken — each with its own emotional angle and its own sonic space. He combines contemporary electronic sound with deep personal experience — not through conventional lyrical storytelling, but through atmosphere and vocal lines that carry the feeling directly.

ODYSSAY performs exclusively live. Live vocals plus analog synthesisers — no DJ sets, no playback. That is a principled position: he does not play tracks, he performs them. The difference is felt in the sound and in the way the room responds.

The white image: a protest against black

The ODYSSAY stage aesthetic is recognisable. All white. But at the beginning, by his own account, "there was nothing. I just performed in a black t-shirt."

The shift to white was a deliberate choice. The techno world runs on black: dark clothes, dark clubs, dark aesthetics. ODYSSAY chose the opposite. White as a protest against the trend and as a desire to be seen. To be visible — physically and artistically.

Now that image creates his instant recognisability — at a club performance and on a major concert stage alike. A figure in white in the middle of darkness and light.

ODA Symphony: Palace of Sports and sold-out

28 February 2026 — ODYSSAY presented the ODA Symphony programme at the Kyiv Palace of Sports. Sold out. Full house.

The programme: GOS orchestra symphony orchestra + professional choir + a secret guest from the global electronic scene + pyrotechnic and lighting show + giant 3D screen and progressive visual technologies. A format Ukrainian electronic music had not seen before: a full audiovisual event where live electronic performance meets symphonic sound.

ODYSSAY admitted after the show that he had not known until the end whether the hall would fill: "No. But I really wanted it. For three months I fell asleep with an image in front of my eyes. Me standing there and a full hall. I didn't know how it would be. I simply didn't know. I won't say I was confident that many people would come. But it's very nice that they came. That all of you came. Amazing."

European touring

ODYSSAY performs actively outside Ukraine. Shows at significant clubs and festivals in Germany, Poland, France and Spain. For a Ukrainian electronic artist to reach those venues is not just geography — it is a level, with its own competition and its own standards.

After the start of the full-scale war ODYSSAY has used concerts as a platform to support Ukraine — during performances he participates in fundraising for humanitarian needs and assistance to the Armed Forces.

Next goals

After ODA Symphony, ODYSSAY has spoken about a technical upgrade and collaborations with top names of the global electronic scene — including ARTBAT and KOROLOVA. Both artists are of Ukrainian origin but long established on the international market. A collaboration with them would be a natural next step in ODYSSAY's wider international reach.

What an ODYSSAY live show is

An ODYSSAY live show is not a DJ set. Nobody is playing tracks. Maksym Yermaakov stands in front of analog synthesisers and sings — in real time. Each performance differs from the previous one, because live sound cannot be reproduced exactly twice.

That is exactly why ODA Symphony was such a natural idea: if you already perform with live sound, the next step is to add a symphony orchestra. Not as a backdrop, but as a full participant in the sound.
